As regards the HPV vaccine dose update. To understand what might happen in the future, scientists used advanced computer programs to predict health trends in the U.S. over the next 100 years. They looked at the costs and benefits of different vaccination schedules.
The computer models showed that giving two doses of the HPV vaccine is a smart way to save money. In fact, two doses prevent cancer almost as well as three doses. However, the researchers noted a catch: this strategy works best if the protection from those two shots stays strong in the body for at least 20 years.
Scientists backed up these computer predictions by comparing results from two major studies in Tanzania and Kenya involving more than 1,200 participants.
They discovered that giving just a single shot of the vaccine to girls aged 9 to 14 created a strong immune defense. Two years later, their bodies were just as ready to fight the virus as the bodies of young women aged 15 to 20. Since we already know that one shot effectively stops infections in the older group , this comparison confirms that a single shot should protect younger girls just as well.
Thanks to this strong evidence, the World Health Organization (WHO) has updated its guidance. Girls and young women aged 9 to 20 can now receive just one or two doses of the HPV vaccine. For women older than 21, the recommendation is to receive two doses spaced six months apart. However, individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV, still need three doses to ensure full protection. You can read part 1 of the article here.
